COMMITTEES

World Food Programme (WFP)

World Food Programme (WFP) was launched in 1961 shortly after the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Conference held in 1960, with a mission of ending hunger, achieving food security and providing improved nutrition by 2030. With the increasing poverty and famine in our planet, WFP battles the possibility of catastrophic consequences regarding our growing population. WFP’s efforts focus on emergency assistance, relief and rehabilitation, development aid and special operations. The majority of the effort is done in conflict-affected nations, where the likelihood of undernourishment is three times higher than in peaceful nations. WFP has drawn attention to numerous issues and aided other UN departments in order to accomplish their promised duties, also made a commitment to the Member States to carry out the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Zero Hunger and Partnership for the Goals. WFP was given the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020 for its work in preventing the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict, improving the circumstances for peace in conflict-affected areas, and serving as a catalyst for such efforts.

JCC: FATE OF HATAY

Middle East has been the scene of countless political, cultural and diplomatic contentions throughout history. Hatay, which is a region located between Middle East and Anatolia, has muchly experienced such international struggles and wars due to its location.

Hatay has been under Ottoman rule for centuries. The region was outside the borders of Republic of Turkey according to the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne, and the main diplomatic crisis related with the region begun with the plans of the French to give independence to the Syrian state in 1936. Following the latest situation,Turkey demanded that the Hatay region should also be given a separate independence such as it was planned by France for Syria. Following the recent flow, future of Hatay became a case that could be shaped both in favour of France’s and Turkey’s strategic, culrutal and economic benefits.

In the current status, Fate Of Hatay has become a conflict between the two states, which went beyond diplomacy and stated to create military tensions and takes important places in international organizations. Dispute has undoubtedly entered the path of giving a conclusion. So that, the history to be written will show what direction the result of Hatay crisis will be.

The European Court of Human Rights

The European Court of Human Rights is an international court based in Strasbourg, France. The Court’s judges are selected by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe from a list of applicants proposed by the Member States.
The task of the European Court of Human Rights is to ensure that States respect the rights and guarantees set out in the European Convention on Human Rights. It does this by examining complaints (known as “applications”) lodged by individuals or States. If the court determines that one or more of these rights and guarantees have been breached by a member State, it delivers a judgment finding a violation. These judgments are binding: the countries concerned are under an obligation to comply with them.
As part of this year’s ILSAMUN conference, the European Court of Human Rights will hear the case “Herri Batasuna and Batasuna v. Spain”. In order to determine whether the “freedom of expression” and “freedom of assembly and association” have been violated, the court will hear the parties’ statements regarding the conflict.
